Pennies For Change, Inc. is proud to announce the Amy McKay Rector Memorial Scholarship Fund in memoriam of our co-founder, daughter, mother and friend Amy Rector. Amy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in August 2014 in Roanoke, Va. She immediately left her home in Floyd, Va. to move to Eden in order to take treatments at the Smith-McMichael Cancer Center. Her initial diagnoses was not very promising, but Amy was very adamant in the fact that she would defeat this disease. “My Mother and Grandmother are the two strongest women I have ever met.” said Amy’s Son Peyton Gravely. “As grim as the diagnosis was, I knew if there was ever someone that was strong enough in their faith and self to overcome this disease it was Mama.”, added Gravely. Peyton, who also co-founded Pennies For Change, Inc. and lives in Martinsville, Va., immediately moved from his home to Eden to care for his Mother, Grandmother and 5 year old Step-Niece. “It was and most likely forever will be the greatest experience of my life.”, said Peyton.
Amy spent many days, weeks and months back and forth taking treatments, getting x-rays and conducting follow-ups with her Oncology staff. The staff that was built around Amy was amazing and so wonderful to work with, according to the family. Unfortunately due to the volatility of these treatments Amy’s body began to breakdown and she became very weak. On Sunday, December 22, 2014 at 8:04a, Amy won her battle with Lung Cancer. She fulfilled her duties on earth and went to be with her heavenly bride Jesus Christ. “We are so proud of Mom. She fought valiantly throughout and never wavered in her faith. She continued to teach us invaluable lessons throughout her battle. I will be forever grateful for my Mother.” said Peyton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Amy McKay Rector Memorial Scholarship Fund. To this day we have raised over $500 to go to help a student from Rockingham County, whom have overcome impoverished and destitute situations away from the classroom and excelled within it. It is our honor to carry on the legacy of Amy in this way. Her smile and care for others was second to none. She touched more lives in more ways than anyone here at Pennies For Change could have ever imagined and that is a true blessing!
